Subject: Server crashes, power outages, and the next move...
From: "Scott R. Laleman" <[email protected]>
To: <all-staff>

Good afternoon everyone...
Here's some bits of info for you, just FYI. Most of these will effect everyone so before you hit the delete button, please read on...
Server: I've been have a lot of headaches with our student server. This is where the student home directories and group shared folders are located, along with the login stuff. About once a day, it crashes, forcing me to restart it. Since I haven't had a lot of time to become familiar with the new servers yet, I'm trying different things to solve the problem. In the meantime, if you notice that your computers can't find the login server (ie they don't come up with a login screen) or that you can't access the group shared folder, try logging out and logging back in. Usually by the time you've done that, I'll have it up and running again. If that doesn't work try restarting, and if that doesn't work, give me a call.
Power Outage: The power will be shut off in the building tomorrow (Saturday) for a short time. I will not be here to shut down the servers, so things may not be working correctly come Monday morning. I'll get the servers up and running again (if they're off) as soon as I come in.
Power Outage Part II: Because the power will be off, some of your iMacs (the blue ones) will reset their date and time. Please check the date and time on these machines when you come in Monday. The date and time being set incorrectly effects the emails you send, and it prevents you from being able to print to any laser printer.
The Move: I'm going to have Midco come out on Thursday to start moving phone extensions, so your phone may go dead at some point during the day on Thursday. We will also have to redo the speaker wiring on all of the phones, which takes about 20 minutes per phone. I apologize for the inconvenience.
If you have any questions, please email me or call me.
Thanks again for your unending patience and cooperation!
